Russell Island News

2008

12th April - YES Our new swimming pool was officially opened. And what fun was it for the kids ! Big smiles all around. Our new councillor Barbara Townsend and John English our MP for Redlands were there - not in the pool though - but having a chat with locals and in general enjoying the beautiful April day before attending to their respective duties. And although the pool will close for winter, come September we can all make some good splashes.

Meetings

On Monday May 28 there was a meeting held on Macleay Island at the Community Hall at 7.30pm. Among those present were representatives of various groups on the islands and representatives of the community services on the islands. There were also two representatives from the State Department of Communities, Suzette Robertson (Principal Project Officer) and John Beirne (Manager), who was the guest speaker of the meeting. John outlined a wide range of possible ways the islands communities could access his department but emphasized the fact that his main role would be to facilitate access to a wide range of state departments and their assistance/funding. It was suggested that the group meet on a monthly basis.

Monday, 21 May 2007, 7.30 pm a meeting of the Russell Island Progress Association was held at Russell Island Recreation Hall, chaired by Lee Shipley and attended by people of various backgrounds with the joint aim of providing a unified voice for the benefit of Russell Island.
Issues, ideas and actions discussed:
1. Keep up pressure for repairs to jetty (Lee's part in this was recognised)
2. Explore pontoon options for small boats to tie up at jetty
3. Area beautification
4. Put Russell Island forward as contender for the Moreton Bay Tourism Awards for next year.
5. Become a member of Redlands Tourism.
6. Promote public access to the foreshore.
7. Explore environmental issues, eg mangroves, mosquitoes
8. Establish attractions for families.
It was proposed and seconded that:
(a) a social night be held in 2 weeks to discuss further priorities, and
(b) an AGM be held in one month's time to elect officers, followed by a normal meeting where issues would be discussed. The motion was carried. Lee offered to organise flyers for the meeting, with a form allowing people to identify ideas and areas of interest to contribute to the general discussion. The meeting closed at 9.30.

Swimming Pool is coming

The long awaited swimming pool is intended to open on the first day of the new swimming season.

Shopping Centre

Council has a full application for a new Shopping Centre in High Street. Also a full application has been lodged for a tourist development in Wright Street.

Footpath

A new footpath will be constructed from High Street along Jackson Road to the Community Centre.

Sport Fields

Redland Shire Council plan to develop more sport and recreation areas.

Water Position

Proposed new restrictions will apply in the Redlands for the owners of new and existing outdoor residential pools and spas. In order to use water from the town water supply to fill new and renovated pools and spas, it would be necessary to have three of the four water-saving measures in place on the property. These include the use of a pool cover, water-efficient showerheads, kitchen and bathroom taps, toilets and washing machines. Other than these two areas, the Shire will remain on level 2 restrictions.

Cenotaph

Council has provided a $25,000 grant to the Russell Island RSL to rebuild and reposition the current cenotaph. The work is subject to a State Government grant that the RSL is applying for in May.
